Washington DC is the nation's capital and home to some of the best attractions in the entire country. Each year, people from all over the world come to this city to see the historical sites, governmental buildings and interesting museums. More than most cities, Washington DC has an abundance of things to see and do.

1. Lincoln Memorial

Many historians regard Abraham Lincoln as the country's greatest president. The Lincoln Memorial, with its almost 20 foot tall statue of the president, is a fitting tribute to a great man.

2. Washington Monument

The Washington Monument is a 555 foot tall structure that resembles an ancient Egyptian obelisk. There is an observation deck at the top with great views of the city.

3. Jefferson Memorial

This rotunda-style building honors the third president and author of the Declaration of Independence.

4. Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial

This memorial is quickly becoming the most popular of the memorial sites in Washington DC. There are statues and waterfalls at the site. The main statue depicts President Roosevelt with his favorite dog named Fala.

5. National Gallery of Art

This gallery has two separate buildings. One of the buildings is entirely devoted to contemporary art. Highlights of the gallery include the work of Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Turner and Whistler.

6. Capitol Hill

The U.S. Capitol Building is a great place to take a tour. Visit the chambers of the U.S House and Senate and see where history was made.

7. National Zoo

This is one of the most prestigious zoological parks in the world. There are over 4,000 animals to see at this zoo. Plan to spend the day. Among the zoo's most popular animals are the pandas. This exhibit is very busy.

8. The Smithsonian Museums

There are 15 museums in the nation's capital that are operated by the Smithsonian Institution. All of them are worth a visit if there is time. Three of the best are the Air and Space Museum, the Museum of American History and the Natural History Museum.

9. National Portrait Gallery

This gallery has portraits of all the men who served as president. There are also portraits of other great Americans.

10. National Museum of the United States Navy

This interesting museum details the role of the U.S. Navy in every American conflict from the days of the Revolutionary War to the present war in Afghanistan.
