Important Information About Moving Insurance Coverage

1/10/2013 4:22:00 PM by Universal Moving & Storage Llc

When you relocate, it is important understand the fine points of a moving insurance policy, especially if you have valuable goods you wish to protect. While your moving company will do all in their power to protect your household goods from breakage or loss, you should be prepared for the occasional loss or destruction of an item they may occur during a long distance relocation. It is natural to want to cut costs when purchasing moving insurance, but it is important to realize that inexpensive moving insurance policies rarely provide full coverage for a move.

When considering the available moving insurance options, pay special attention to pairs insurance, electronic insurance, mold and mildew insurance, and sentimental value insurance. Pairs coverage covers you for the cost of replacing a whole set of items if only one of them is lost. Pairs coverage is more effective than a mere cost of replacement policy, which will, in the event that one or more items of a set of cutlery, for example, was lost, only cover the cost of replacing the lost item(s). Pairs coverage will cover the cost of purchasing a new set, should it prove impossible to find a matching item. An electronics insurance policy will cover you for imperceptible damage to the inner workings of an electronic appliance, even though the object may look normal from the outside. Because the damage can't be seen from the outside, a cost of replacement policy probably won't agree to compensate for the loss. A mold and mildew policy will cover the cost of cleaning or if necessary replacing an item, such as clothing or furniture that has become infected with mold or mildew.

You have some important responsibilities to undertake before you can get reimbursed for damages. Your first responsibility is to completely fill out and sign the insurance policy. Be sure to fill in the value of every item you wish to insure. Be sure to keep a copy of the policy in a safe place. You or your representative must inspect all boxes before and after delivery by the moving company. You or your representative must make a complete list of all items being shipped, with description of damages noted both before and after the relocation. The list must be signed both at pickup and delivery by you and the mover's team leader. You must photograph any items on your high value list.

Most policies will permit you to store your goods for as long as 60 days at a location selected by the mover. However, if you require more than 60 days you must apply for an extension before the 60 days are up. If you don't request an extension, the liability of the policy is terminated. You need to know that if at any time during the relocation process you request that the goods be handed over to a third party the insurance will terminate. Should you find that you must use another moving company to finish the move then you must inform the movers, and both you and the movers must thoroughly inspect all of your goods at the time of transfer, noting any loss or damage that occurred while the goods were in the custody of the first mover.

Once damage or loss has been discovered and documented you have up to 45 days to make your claim to the insurance company. If your claim involves damage as opposed to loss of an item, be sure not to dispose of the damaged possession until the insurance adjuster has had a chance to inspect it. Get the go ahead from the insurance company before throwing it away. Check to see if your moving insurance policy includes a salvage clause. This clause bestows upon the insurance company the right to take possession of any damaged item once they have made full restitution for it. Expensive articles such as jewelry, coins, stock, stamps, and valuable collectibles are seldom covered by move insurance. To protect them, the owner needs to have each item professionally evaluated for value and then itemized. You should know that moving insurance will not reimburse you for any goods that are confiscated by a government during the course of the move. Intellectual property loss (such as information contained on a destroyed disk) is not compensated for and property that has no significant cash value is not paid for unless a homeowner takes out a special policy that reimburses for the pre-declared sentimental worth of an object. A sentimental value policy requires additional payments, and its cost is based on the declared worth of items to be shipped.
